What Progress in Therapy Really Looks Like (Hint: It’s Not Always Obvious)

Starting therapy often comes with hope for big changes right away. Parents may expect new words, easier mealtimes, smoother routines, or stronger skills almost immediately. While progress absolutely happens, it does not always appear in large, dramatic moments.

Often, the most meaningful growth begins with small changes that are easy to miss at first.

Those little wins matter more than you may realize.

What Progress Can Look Like

Progress in therapy may look like:

  • Making more eye contact during play

  • Trying a new food after weeks of hesitation

  • Using a gesture instead of crying

  • Sitting longer during an activity

  • Following directions more consistently

  • Joining play with others more often

  • Attempting a new word or sound

  • Recovering from frustration more quickly

  • Showing confidence in new environments

These small moments are often signs that important foundational skills are developing.

Why the Small Wins Matter

Big milestones are often built on many smaller steps.

• A child who can sit and engage longer may be developing attention skills needed for learning.

• A child who points instead of crying is learning communication.

• A child who touches or smells a new food may be building comfort that can lead to tasting later on.

• A child who joins play with others may be growing social confidence and connection skills.

Progress is rarely one giant leap. More often, it is many steady steps.

Growth Is Not Always Linear

Some weeks feel exciting and full of breakthroughs. Other weeks may feel slower. That is completely normal.

Children often need repetition, practice, and time before a new skill becomes consistent. They may use a skill in therapy first, then later show it at home or school. Growth can happen quietly before it becomes obvious.

❤️ Celebrate the Journey

Recognizing small progress helps families stay encouraged and reminds children that their effort matters. Every attempt, every new skill, and every moment of confidence is worth celebrating.

At More Than Speech, we believe success is more than one big milestone. It is the collection of many meaningful moments that help a child thrive.

We love helping families notice progress, celebrate wins, and support each child through every step of their journey.
