Toddlers and preschoolers love saying, “I do it myself!” While it may take a little extra time and patience, encouraging independence helps children build confidence, problem-solving skills, and everyday life skills.
The good news? Many opportunities to build independence happen naturally during everyday routines at home.
1. Let Them Help Get Dressed
Allow your child to practice pulling up pants, pushing arms through sleeves, or choosing between two outfits. These small tasks build motor skills and confidence.
2. Create a Simple Cleanup Routine
Use baskets or labeled bins for toys and books. When items have a clear home, children can begin cleaning up more independently.
3. Encourage Handwashing Steps
Let your child practice turning on the water, getting soap, rubbing hands together, and drying off. Daily routines are great opportunities for learning.
4. Give Small Mealtime Jobs
Ask your child to carry napkins, place utensils on the table, or throw away trash after meals. Helping with family routines builds responsibility.
5. Praise Effort, Not Perfection
Learning independence takes time. Celebrate attempts by saying things like, “You worked so hard putting your shoes on!”
Independence does not mean doing everything alone. It means learning through practice with support.
✨ Small moments of independence can lead to big confidence over time. If your child needs extra support with daily routines or self help skills, we would love to help you create a plan that fits your family’s needs.
